SUNDAY MORNING IN JAMESPORT, MAY 1839

clip_image002.jpgWednesday, August 19, 7 PM the Jamesport Meeting House will host an illustrated talk by Fred Bender and Richard Wines about the making of Bender's painting "Sunday Morning in JamesPort, May 1839."   Bender and Wines will discuss the historical research and artistic decisions that went into the painting, A Gull's Eye View that shows in remarkable detail all the original homes in the area now called South Jamesport in the decade of its founding.  Free to the public.

This is a preview event for the House Tour of Historic Jamesport that the Meeting House is sponsoring on Saturday, September 19, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.   That tour will feature visits to a dozen wonderful homes, including five that appear in Bender's painting.
clip_image004.jpgThe Bender painting will be featured on promotional material for the September 19 tour. Prints of the painting will be available for sale at both the talk and the tour.  No one who loves Jamesport will want to miss this painting or these events.

The detail from Bender's painting at the top of the page shows the boat yard on Miamogue Point and the ships in the harbor, including the Olive Branch, an early steamboat that briefly served JamesPort in the 1830's.  The other detail shows parts of South Jamesport Avenue and Point Street, and includes several homes that will be on the tour.

Come on August 19 to see the painting, learn about the history and buy a print.  Come on September 19 to tour the historic houses.
